Grand theft auto 4 - the plot

Niko Bellic, is a 30 year old Yugoslavian and veteran of the bloody Bosnian War. In pursuance of the American dream, he has landed in Liberty City. Unfortunately, Niko believed his cousin’s (Roman) stories that he was living the high life, with a large mansion, beautiful women and sports cars galore. However, Roman's lies are hiding his own failures as he owns a small taxi business, which he wants Niko to work for.

In Liberty City Niko only knows Roman to begin with, and is one of his major connections in the first part of the game. Niko is a tough dark foreboding character, whereas Roman is friendlier. Roman finds out that he is much more popular than he would want, being heavily in debt. Roman is in desperate need of help from Niko and this is the reason that he deceived him into traveling to Liberty City. However, it is later revealed that one of the reasons Niko, as an ex-soldier, goes to Liberty City, is to track down the man who betrayed his old army unit.

The story features two possible endings, all of which feature different mission strands depending on which choice the player makes at certain points in the game.
